On August 10th, Tsinghua University held the unveiling ceremony of the large-scale photovoltaic power station climatic-environmental- ecological effect research observation field and the “One Belt and One Road” climate and energy research academic report in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Nearly 80 people from relevant institutions and organizations attended the conference. The China News Service, Xinhua News Agency Xinjiang Branch and other media reported the event.

According to the strategic cooperation agreement between Tsinghua University and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the construction of world-class universities (disciplines) and special development guidance funds, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) of Tsinghua University built the research and observation site for the climatic-environment al-ecological effects of large-scale photovoltaic power plants in Wujiaqu City at the end of 2017. After more than half a year of observation equipment debugging, systematic observation and research work has been carried out. Based on this, a graduate social practice base of Tsinghua has also been established.

At the unveiling ceremony, Hu Kelin, the government representative of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Zhao Yazhong, deputy director of the Science and Technology Bureau of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, respectively delivered congratulations. Deputy Director Zhao Yazhong, Professor Luo Yong from the DESS, Chen Miao, Chairman of Xinjiang Bonage Materials Technology Co., Ltd., and Deputy General Manager Wu Nan of Xinjiang Haotou Power Technology Co., Ltd. jointly inaugurated the field and the operation of the observing system.。

Wujiaqu Large-scale Photovoltaic Power Plant observation field will not only accumulates necessary climate, environment and ecologic data information for the “One Belt and One Road” construction, supports the response to climate change, renewable energy development and utilization, and provides a good observation and research platform for world-leading research, but also opens a new model of university-government, university-industry cooperation, and postgraduate training.

After the unveiling ceremony, Li Junfeng, the former director of the National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC), Chen Yaning, director of the State Key Laboratory of Desert and Oasis Ecology, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Jiang Tong, National Climate Center of China Meteorological Administration, Chen Ying, deputy director of the Center for Sustainable Development, Institute for Urban and Environmental Studies Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Luo Yong, deputy director of the DESS, successively gave reports on the theme of “One Belt and One Road”regional climate, ecology, resource and energy.

Ph.D. students of Tsinghua University who were conducting summer social practice in the Urumqi Economic Development Zone also gave reports.
