On the morning of September 3, the department of Earth System Science (DESS) hosted 2018 Graduate Students Opening Ceremony in building 6, A205. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Luo Yong, the party secretary of the DESS branch and deputy director of the department. More than 30 people, included Professor Gong Peng, the director of the DESS, Professor Zhang Qiang, deputy director of the department, Wu Haiping, deputy director of the DESS and deputy secretary of general party branch, Professor Wang Bin, academic leader, Professor Lu Hui, leader of the research group, representatives of graduate student tutors and 2018 graduate students, attended the opening ceremony.

On behalf of all the faculty and students of the DESS, Prof. Gong welcomed new students to join the department. Then he began with ancient people's wisdom of observing nature in Zhuang Zi's Peripateticism. He told about the natural and cultural landscape of China and Africa and the research on the health of the planet. Combined with his experience in the wild, he presented a beautiful atlas to the graduate freshmen. Prof. Gong encouraged students that humans all over the world came with the evolution of the earth and also experienced vicissitudes. Africa's destiny is our destiny. To make the world a better place, we need to work together for the health of the planet.

Prof. Lin, winner of the 2016 Tsinghua University special award for good teacher and helpful friend and the 2018 Beijing teacher morality pioneer, spoke as the teacher representative. Combined his experience of studying typhoons, he encouraged new students to develop systematic thinking ability, set up clear scientific research ideas, and maintain unremitting exploration of earth system science.

Li Weijia, the graduate student representative and 2017 national scholarship recipient of doctoral degree, introduced the difficulties which she had encountered and the help offered by the department in her own learning experience. She hoped that while cultivating independent research ability, graduate freshmen should not forget their original intention and forge ahead. Liu Han, the graduate freshman representative and future scholar scholarship recipient, expressed his expectations for the upcoming graduate life. He said on behalf of the freshmen that they would firmly pursue academic truth and keep in mind the principle of being a man with both ability and integrity and putting morality first.

Finally, Prof. Zhang introduced the education teaching of the DESS from three aspects: the introduction of professional training program, the formulation of personal training plan and the online course selection.

There are 26 graduate freshmen, among which 7 are master transfer students of the department. In the next two weeks, the DESS will carry out a number of entrance education activities, such as professional subjects education, basic statistics and outgoing practice.
