The Department of Earth System Science (DESS) of Tsinghua University held the 2018 Earth System Model R&D and Application International Summer School from July 8th to 11th in the lecture hall of the School of Science. Nearly one hundred graduate and advanced undergraduate students and young scholars from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, China Agricultural University, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing University of Technology, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Chengdu University of Information Technology, University Of Science and Technology Of Hunan, Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Technical University of Denmark, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Institute of Geography,Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment Resources, Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences,Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, National Marine Environment Forecast Center, China Institute for Radiation Protection, Peking Union Medical College, and Beijing Caiyun Tech Co., Ltd, et al., participated in the study.
The Earth system model is a mathematical physics model based on dynamic, physical, chemical, and biological processes in the Earth system, and uses numerical computation method to simulate the multi-layered interaction of the Earth and the future evolution. It is an indispensable tool for deepening the understanding of the operating mechanism of the Earth system, revealing the evolution rule, and predicting future trends.
In order to encourage young students to engage in research and application of the Earth system model, cultivate the reserve talents of the earth sciences, and improve the level of international education, the DESS is scheduled to hold the Earth System Model R&D and Application International Summer School in July each year. The summer school is mainly for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates at Tsinghua University, with some places available for the public.
The theme of the 2018 International Summer School is Atmospheric Model. The content includes the atmospheric model dynamic framework, radiative parameterization, turbulence and atmospheric boundary layer, convective parameterization scheme, aerosol parameterization and its interaction with the cloud, satellite remote sensing data. in applications of climate simulation, regional climate models, etc. Professor Wang Bin and Professor Zhang Guangjun from the DESS, Prof. Gu Yu, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles, Professor Zhu Ping, Department of Earth and Environment, University of Florida, and Professor Liu Xiaohong, University of Wyoming, USA, Associate Professor Wang Yi, the Department of Geography, Sussex, UK, etc., gave lectures at this year’s summer. In addition to classroom teaching, the teaching form also includes online open courses and academic salon exchanges.
