2019 is the 108th anniversary of the establishment of Tsinghua University and the 10th anniversary of the restoration of Department of Earth System Sciences (DESS). On the morning of April 28th, DESS held alumni symposium, inviting alumni representatives reviewed and shared the experience and career experience of DESS. The symposium was held in Room 818, Mengminwei Science and Technology Building. Haiping Wu, deputy director of the Department of Earth System Sciences, and deputy secretary of the Party Branch, Hui Lu, the head of the Party Team of graduate students, and Yawei Chen, a liaison with the alumni, attended the symposium.

Haiping Wu extended a warm welcome to all alumni to return to their alma mater. He said that it is very important to strengthen communication with alumni. The reputation and influence of the DESS department depend to a large extent on the performance of alumni outside the university. The development of the DESS requires the attention of alumni, and hopes that alumni will help comprehensive development of graduate students. Haiping Wu also introduced the background of the “study style discussion” that the school recently carried out among the students. The alumni are welcome to speak freely on the construction of the school.

The alumni spoke enthusiastically at the symposium. Many alumni said that the postgraduate course content of the Department of Earth System Sciences is close to science and industry frontiers. It’s not until they step out of the university, they discovered that they obtained great support in the follow-up scientific research and work during their school days. The training of the teachers will benefit them for entire life.

The alumni also shared their work experience after graduation. The 2018 alumni Jian Zhou and Yizhen Zheng were post-doctoral fellows from Peking University and Stanford University respectively. After graduating, they both chose to continue their research work. They introduced the mentality shift from doctor to postdoctoral, and encouraged students in school to strengthen self-management and improve the consciousness of learning.

The 2018 alumnus Yang Nan is currently working at the China Meteorological Administration. He said that he is now able to use what he has learned at school for practical work. It is very meaningful to contribute to the country and society. He will continue to do so. He also suggested that students should think about their future career choices in combination with their initial intentions before seeking a job. At the same time, they should also comprehensively plan their careers in advance.

2018 alumnus Wenliang Cui is currently working in the government of Shuangtang Township, Xiong County. By telling specific examples of working at the grassroots level, he said that grassroots work needs to further combine the professional knowledge and practice that was learned during the school, and at the same time, to do work in promoting the awareness of ecological environment, so that the people can recognize and accept it.

Finally, the alumni patiently answered questions from current students about the research, employment, etc., and encouraged everyone to cherish the good times during the school, and strive to absorb knowledge and lay a good foundation for future work or further study.

After the meeting, the alumni returned to their research group and went to the student dining halls with the faculty and students to relive the unique taste of Tsinghua.
