Introduction to the Lecture: The ocean with myriad unsolved mysteries is a cradle of life, a treasure house of resources, a paradise for scientists, and also a frontier field related to national strategic needs such as maritime rights and interests, security, resource development, and disaster prevention and mitigation. Starting from the importance and imperativeness of oceanographic research, the lecture will introduce the developments of international oceanographic research and the prospect of China’s oceanographic research. China, in a period of opportunities during its transition from a country of vast maritime territory to a maritime power, can very probably realize the leap-forward development in the maritime field given proper top design and equal attention to both science and technology.
