Introduction to the Lecture:

COVID-19 virus can spread when there is poor ventilation. Urban pollution and urban heat island effect are aggravated when there is no and when there is temperature inversion. The duality of air flow is a great challenge to control the spread of COVID-19 and urban pollution. Air can dilute pollution or transport pollution from one place (room, city) to another. The duality of air flow leads to difficulties in decision-making. For example, should the windows of a quarantine hotel be opened? The speaker will discuss the challenge of artificial environment design from the study of COVID-19 transmission and urban heat island effect.

Profile of the Speaker:

Li Yuguo is a professor of architectural environment at the University of Hong Kong and Vice President of the School of Engineering (research). His current research interests include the study of urban climate and environmental health. His team discovered evidence of airborne transmission during the outbreak of SARS in Amoy Garden in Hong Kong in 2003, revealed the mechanism of close inhalation transmission route of the COVID-19 virus in 2020 and found evidence of long-distance airborne transmission. The research results have been adopted and applied by the World Health Organization, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and other health and engineering institutions. He is currently the editor-in-chief of Indoor Air, a journal of architectural environment.
