At 9: 30 a.m. on April 19th, 2022, the job-hunting experience sharing meeting held by Class 2018 and Class 2019 Party Branches of DESS Graduate Program was held in S927, South Building of Meng Minwei Science and Technology Building as scheduled. The activity was carried out both online and offline. Nearly 30 students from the two party branches of the DESS Graduate Program participated in this event. Three students, Zhang Shuai, a Class 2017 doctoral graduate of the Department of Chemistry, and Xia Yang and Qiu Tianpei, two Class 2017 doctoral graduates of the Department of Earth System Science, were invited to share their job-hunting experience and insights.

Zhang Shuai shares his job-hunting experience

Zhang Shuai is going to work with the Head Office of China Construction Bank upon graduation. He has rich job-hunting experience in recommended transfer to government offices, with relevant institutions such as central enterprises (CITIC Group, Minmetals Group and Guoxin Group) and in the financial sector (four major banks and three major policy banks).

Zhang Shuai first presented the timeline of autumn recruitment based on his own experience. In addition, he also introduced how to narrow the range of choices to reduce useless efforts, including self-analysis, communicating with others and acquiring effective information in time. Later, Zhang Shuai detailed the characteristics of central enterprises in autumn recruitment. For example, according to the property rights and control subjects, central enterprises can fall into three categories: industrial, financial and other department management. He also introduced the advantages and disadvantages of the overall financial sector offers and the basis for his final employment choice by taking the offer from the Head Office of CCB he accepted as an example. Finally, for job-hunting preparation, Zhang Shuai offered us many constructive suggestions, including ways to learn about employment information, how to prepare application materials, matters of attention in online application, written test and interview, among others.

Qiu Tianpei shares her job-hunting experience

Qiu Tianpei is going to work with the High School Attached to Peking University upon graduation. She has rich job-hunting experience with state-owned enterprises and central enterprises such as Huaneng, China Energy and CSSC.

Qiu Tianpei first introduced the preparation of application materials in the early stage, the target orientation of job-hunting, the experience or certificates needed for target occupations, and the adjustment of mindset during job-hunting according to her autumn recruitment experience and timeline. Qiu Tianpei then went on to detail the interview process of state-owned enterprises, central enterprises and middle schools. Finally, Qiu Tianpei shared the common interview questions and coping skills.

Xia Yang shares her job-hunting experience

Xia Yang is going to work with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau upon graduation. She has rich job-hunting experience in recommended transfer to government offices in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, state-owned enterprises (energy enterprises), meteorological bureaus, research institutes (including meteorological direction of enterprise research institutes and research institutes under meteorological bureaus) and other related institutions.

Xia Yang first gave a detailed introduction to the official recruitment channels (websites and WeChat official accounts), the autumn recruitment timeline of public institutions and the main categories of state-owned enterprises (energy, military, etc.) of meteorological bureaus according to her on job-hunting experience with meteorological bureaus. Xia Yang then introduced her experience in examinations for recommended transfer to government offices.

In the free discussion and answering session, the students raised many questions. Zhang Shuai, Qiu Tianpei and Xia Yang responded with detailed answers to the questions as to how to intern during the study in the doctoral program and how to balance internship and scientific research, how to determine their core competitiveness, matters for attention in preparation for the selective examinations for recommended transfer to government offices, and the contents of written examinations and interviews in public institutions.

During the whole sharing meeting, the students listened attentively, and participated actively, learning a lot from the experience of senior students.
