In order to carry out the important instructions made by General Secretary Xi Jinping on graduate education and the spirit of the National Conference on Graduate Education, to deeply understand the importance of graduate education in national development and social progress, and to establish the overall outlook and sense of mission of graduate education, on September 25, the Academic Department of the Graduate Union of Department of Earth System science (hereinafter referred to as "DESS"), held a "research and teaching" mini-salon to responded the call of the Graduate Union of Tsinghua University. Wu Haiping, the deputy secretary of the Party branch and deputy director of DESS, was invited to have lunch with 16 students from different grades, talking about the problems and experiences encountered in graduate education, academic research and daily life.

     As for the problem of "how to balance research and student work", Wu Haiping proposed that we should make a good career plan for students’ career in advance, so them can carry out scientific research work with direction and destination, and better achieve both students and scientific research work. He suggested that students should make their own career planning, clarify their interests, exercise their abilities, and achieve the ultimate in what they want to do during their study in Tsinghua.

When talking about “how to maintain a good relationship between supervisors and students”, Wu Haiping assimilate the relationship between supervisors and students with "big fish swim with small fish". He pointed out that supervisors teach students the basic skills and scientific thinking needed for scientific research; Students learn to think independently, willing to find new problems, and solve new problems in an innovative way, with the guidance of their supervisors.

During the communication, Wu Haiping introduced the origin of the development of DESS, its responsibilities and missions, and its achievements in recent years. Teacher Wu pointed out that the DESS is a multi-disciplinary interdisciplinary stage, the direction of the DESS’s teachers engaged in a wide range of coverage, from the geography, remote sensing to ecological economy, creating a very good interdisciplinary atmosphere. He suggested that students should pay attention to aspect of interdisciplinary: First, to lay a good foundation for their own disciplines, which is the premise of interdisciplinary; Second, to attach importance to communication, not only with supervisors, but also with classmates and people in other professional fields.

During this activity, students spoke enthusiastically, and the atmosphere was lively and warm. Through this “noon canteen” mini-salon, the students’ self-confidence on future scientific research and learning has been strengthened, and the students’ sense of mission and responsibility in the DESS have been improved.
