Recently, Tsinghua CESS ocean modeling group successfully implemented their original work "a highly scalable ocean barotropic solver" to the Community Earth System Model (CESM). The CESM, whose development is centered at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), is one of the most widely used global climate models. The new solver has been incorporated in the CESM software, and will become the default solver in the latest version of the model. The demonstrated enhancements in model performance and scalability will allow higher resolution and longer duration experiments to be carried out to explore a wider range of Earth system science questions.

Earth system models are indispensable scientific tools to conduct a quantitative study for dealing with the challenge of global change. Since the foundation, CESS has devoted itself to reestablishing the earth science program and conducting a comprehensive and systematic study with a focus on global change issues. CESS has already made important breakthroughs in several areas of the earth system modeling.

This collaborative research is facilitated by a six-month visit of Ph.D. student Yong Hu to NCAR, with the support of the Short-Term Study Abroad Fund for the Ph.D. Students of Tsinghua University and the National Natural Science Foundation. Guided by associate Professor Huang Xiaomeng and Professor Yang Guangwen, Yong took advantage of the interdisciplinary background of Oceanography and high performance computing and successfully completed the implementation and optimization of the new solver during the visit. This work is highly recognized by the NCAR.

In April 2nd, Frank Bryan, the leader of NCAR ocean section, sent CESS a thank you letter, and said that this collaborative research between Tsinghua University and NCAR will provide tangible benefits to the international CESM community. Frank also expressed his wish of further collaboration with CESS modeling group in the future.
