Report Title: Water Ecological Security and Development of Ecological Hydrology

Speaker: Xia Jun (academician)

        Wuhan University

Time: 14:00-15:00, September 13, 2021 (Monday)

Venue: S818, South Tower, Meng Minwei Science & Technology Building, Tsinghua University

Abstract:

Water is the source of life, the key of production and the foundation of ecology. Water cycle is the tie of interaction among geosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, pedosphere and anthroposphere of the earth system. Ecological hydrology is not only the basis of important water sciences such as ecological civilization construction, watershed water management, and river and lake ecosystem conservation, but also an important part of the intersection of water and ecosystem in earth science.

The report focuses on water ecological security and ecological hydrology, and introduces the concepts, functions, development, main research contents, research methods, typical applications and current challenges and needs of the discipline.

Speaker Profile:

Xia Jun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor of Wuhan University and President of the Water Security Research Institute, graduated from Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering in 1976 and gained a doctorate in hydrology and water resources in 1985. He was selected for the “Hundred Talents Program” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2000 and once served as the chief scientist of the 973 Program and the director of the State Key Laboratory of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Science (Wuhan University). He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015.

He has long been engaged in the research of hydrology and water resources, and achieved systematic results in the time-varying nonlinear theory and practice of runoff formation and transformation. In addition, he has found the time-varying gain runoff rules controlled by multiple factors such as soil moisture, rainfall intensity and underlying surface, revealed the nonlinear mechanism of hydrological runoff, developed the distributed time-varying gain hydrological model and its water system theory and method coupled with water environment, water ecology and social economy, and promoted the foundation of water science and the application research of water security. These results have been applied in the water management of the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Huaihe River and other basins in China, the management of major water projects for flood control and disaster reduction and for tackling climate change in Northwest China and cities, the construction of sponge cities, etc., thus producing remarkable socio-economic and eco-environmental benefits. So far, he has published 158 SCI papers, 169 EI papers and 12 monographs. He was elected as the chairman of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) in 2009, and is currently the chairman of China Committee of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), member of the IUGG Executive Committee, vice president of the Geographical Society of China and vice president of China Society of Natural Resources. He won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2017. Internationally, he won the IWA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Water Management & Science in 2011 and the IHP-Volker Medal (the highest award in the field of international hydrological science) in 2014, and was selected as IUGG Fellow in 2018. He has “made outstanding contribution to the development of hydrological science and international cooperation”, and benefited the society with his research and hydrological knowledge”.
