Report Title: Discussion on the Subject Orientation of Geographic Information Science

Speaker: Professor Liu Yu

Time: 13:30 ~ 15:05, Monday, November 30, 2020

Venue: 6B407, the sixth teaching building of Tsinghua University

Brief Introduction of the Lecture:

Geographic information science (GIS) has a unique and indispensable position in the discipline system of geography, which is mainly reflected in the following three aspects: 1) it provides the methods and tools of data integration and analysis for the research of departmental geography, thus emphasizing the nature of geography as an observational discipline; 2) in order to achieve the above goals, it is necessary to study the formalization of the basic concepts and laws of geography, using "Spatial thinking" to strengthen the theoretical basis of geography as a unified discipline; 3) With the help of the development of information system, the research results of geography can be exported to other fields, resulting in knowledge spillover, which reflects the characteristics of geography as "practical application". This report will address these issues and explore the future development of geographic information science in the light of the latest advances in artificial intelligence and spatiotemporal big data.

Brief introduction of the presenter:

Liu Yu is a distinguished professor and vice dean of the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University. He has paid long-term commitment to support the study of geospatial models and analysis methods, the social perception theory and methods proposed by him for geographic big data have a greater impact in the international academic community. He has been responsible for and participating in more than ten national scientific research projects. He also has been associate editor of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, International Journal of Geographic Information Science.
