On November 15, 2022, Clarivate released the global list of Highly Cited Researchers in 2022, and five teachers from the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) were selected. Among them, Professor Guan Dabo and Associate Professor Liu Zhu were rated Highly Cited Researchers in the field of environment and ecology, while Assistant Professor Tong Dan, Professor Yang Kun and Professor Zhang Qiang were listed as Highly Cited Researchers in the field of earth science.

 This year, a total of 6,938 scientists and 7,225 people-times around the world were selected as Highly Cited Researchers, and the citation frequency of their highly cited papers ranked top 1% in the same field and year of publication. This year, the number of people on the list from the Chinese mainland ranked second among countries and regions in the world, and the number of selected scientists increased from 935 last year to 1,169 this year. Tsinghua, with 73 Highly Cited Researchers, ranked the fifth in the world and the first among domestic universities. The Highly Cited Researchers of Tsinghua University come from 19 departments, involving 9 ESI disciplines and 1 interdisciplinary field.
