At noon on April 18, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University held the third academic exchange activity of Luncheon Salon in the spring semester of 2024 in S818, Mong Man Wai Technology Building, Tsinghua University. Associate Professor Wang Han from the DESS was invited as the keynote speaker to deliver a report titled “Course Development of Innovative Research Methods for Postgraduates”.

Based on the demonstration course “Innovative Research Methods for Postgraduates”, Wang Han explored a set of teaching modes integrating teaching, interaction and practice from a large amount of teaching practices, and set up objectives and a framework for teaching effectiveness evaluation. The course is designed around the dimensions of learning objectives, atmosphere, methods, process and effect, with which the teaching effect is comprehensively evaluated in the form of questionnaires, classroom records, individual assignments and group presentations.
Wang Han noted that in the course system construction of “Innovative Research Methods for Postgraduates”, students’ innovative ability is trained from five aspects: knowledge acquisition and information processing, theory differentiation and academic criticism, problem discovery and project research, theoretical expression and academic communication, teamwork and interdisciplinary studies. Through course evaluation and learning effect tracking, it is found that the research ability of most students who have taken this course has been significantly improved.
After the sharing, the faculty members present in the meeting had a heated discussion on how to develop high-quality courses.
