On November 15, 2023, Clarivate released the global list of Highly Cited Researchers in 2023, and four teachers from the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University were selected. Among them, Professor Guan Dabo was rated Highly Cited Researchers in the field of environment and ecology, while Assistant Professor Tong Dan, Professor Yang Kun and Professor Zhang Qiang were listed as Highly Cited Researchers in the field of earth science.

This year, a total of 6,849 scientists and 7,125 people-times around the world were selected as Highly Cited Researchers, and the citation frequency of their highly cited papers ranked top 1% in the same field and year of publication. This year, the number of people on the list from the Chinese mainland continued to grow, with the number of selected scientists increasing from 1,169 person-times last year (accounting for 16.2%) to 1,275 person-times this year (accounting for 17.9%). Tsinghua, with 78 person-times of Highly Cited Researchers, ranked the fifth in the world and the first among domestic universities. The Highly Cited Researchers of Tsinghua University this year come from 19 departments, involving 11 ESI disciplines and interdisciplinary fields, with the largest number of Highly Cited Researchers found in interdisciplinary fields (totaling 35 person-times).
