On the afternoon of November 10, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University held a seminar on teaching in the autumn semester of 2022 in Rm. 327 of the main building. Mei Ciqi, President of Xinya College and Associate Professor of School of Public Policy and Management, and Xu Zhidan, Deputy Director of Degree Office of Tsinghua University Graduate School were invited to attend the seminar. Professor Luo Yong, Secretary of the Party Committee and Dean of the DESS, Tsinghua University, all graduate supervisors and office staff of the DESS attended the seminar. Professor Lin Yanluan, Deputy Dean of the DESS, presided over the seminar.

Mei Ciqi delivers a report
Mei Ciqi delivered a report entitled "Curriculum Design from the Perspective of Structural Functionalism: From Fragments to Chapters to Courses". From the perspective of structural functionalism, A/Prof. Mei introduced the relationship between structure and function, pointing out the necessity of discussing structural functionalism in teaching. In his report, Mei emphasized that a curriculum should be centered on subject learning, following the principle that "teaching methods must not be limited and teaching must have methods."

Wang Han delivers a report
With a focus on the development of required courses for majors, Associate Professor Wang Han of the DESS delivered a report on course development entitled "Innovative Research Methods for Postgraduates". She reviewed the course development and introduced the course design and teaching, mentioning that the curriculum should take "three in one" as the training goal, and at the same time have the characteristics of interaction, practice, exploration, co-development and fostering students' growth. In addition, we should also pay attention to cultivating students' innovative and deep thinking skills, and encourage them to make mental preparations for exploring "no man's land".
During the exchange session, the participating teachers discussed how to guide students to explore research in `"no man's land" and post-doctoral training, and then discussed the book How to Become an Excellent University Teacher. Xu Zhidan, A/Prof. Liu Zhu and A/Prof. Peng Yiran from the DESS also shared their ideas.

Luo Yong delivers a speech
In the concluding speech, Luo Yong introduced the guidelines presented at the 26th educational work seminar of the university. Prof. Luo noted that the seminar was well organized and achieved the expected purpose in that it helped teachers better understand the new thinking of the university in terms of discipline layout and talent cultivation by promoting consensus through discussion. Prof. Luo stressed that the talent training of the DESS should also keep pace with the university's development planning and that the training quality should be upgraded. He encouraged teachers and students to carry out original research, achieve breakthroughs and make greater progress in the development of excellent textbooks and courses.
