On the morning of July 6, the department of Earth System Science (DESS) hosted 2018 Graduate Graduation Ceremony at Reception Hall of the Main Building. More than 150 graduates of DESS, and their tutors and relatives attended this ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Luo Yong, the party secretary of the DESS branch.

Professor Luo Yong declared the beginning of ceremony. All the participants stood up to sing the national anthem. Subsequently, Professor Zhang Qiang, deputy director of the department, announced the name list of graduates and outstanding graduates of this year.

Dong Wenhao, who was awarded as “Outstanding Ph.D. Graduate of Tsinghua University”, delivered a speech as a representative of the Ph.D. graduates. He said that the guidance of Professor Lin Yanluan helped him a lot in setting an academic career. On behalf of the graduates, he expressed the gratitude for the support and help given by the family and classmates.

Zhang Wenyuan, who awarded as “Outstanding Master Graduate of Tsinghua University”, reviewed his study life in Tsinghua. After three years in DESS, he has gained the spirit of scientific research, the care of nature and the thinking of the universe, and also precious friendship. He said that no matter where he will be in the future, he will not forget his original heart of being a member of Tsinghua.

Associate Professor Cai Wenjia, who awarded as the Tsinghua University's “2017 New Academic Talent”, encouraged each student to find their core competition in the future. Moreover, try to make as more friends as possible and keep connected to the surroundings, and further get united to make a contribution to the society. In the background of global change, the DESS scholars should shoulder the responsibility.

Prof. Gong Peng, dean of the college of science and the director of the DESS, delivered a speech. He shared an ancient poetry of Su Shi and a famous speech of Henry Augustus Rowland titled “A plea for pure science” with the students. He hope that each graduate would have a good plan for the future, learn to systematically think about dealing with problems, and benefit others with an equal state of mind. Professor Gong Peng’s words caused a strong resonance among the teachers and students.

Finally, Professor Gong Peng issued certificates for the graduates one by one. The ceremony ended in the song of Tsinghua.
