On June 25-27, invited by the Associate Professor Lu Hui of the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), professor Dara Entekhabi, NAE member, the Professor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and assistant professor Kaighin McColl of Harvard University visited the DESS. The previous two sessions of Tsinghua-MIT Water Cycle Observation and Simulation Seminar were successfully held in Tsinghua University in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

In this three-day seminar, more than 30 teachers and students from Tsinghua University, MIT, Harvard University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, and Lanzhou University participated in the SMAP (Soil Moisture) product application seminar.

In the next two and a half days, Professor Dara, Associate Professor Lu Hui and Assistant Professor Kaighin divided the seminar members into eight project groups, involving the topics of soil moisture product analysis, evaporation ratio estimation, machine learning applications, etc, which is aimed at learning and application of SMAP data from different directions.

On the afternoon of the 27th, Prof. Shi Jiancheng, a well-known expert in microwave remote sensing, gave a lecture, and listened to the progress reports of the each team together with Professor Dara, Professor Yang Kun, Associate Professor Lu Hui and Assistant Professor Kaighin.

The seminar was funded by the “Invitation (Employment) Support Program for Overseas Scholars at Tsinghua University”.
