As Tsinghua University celebrates its 115th anniversary, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) hosted an alumni symposium on April 25 at the conference room, South Wing of Mong Man Wai Technology Building. Attendees included Department Chair Academician Chen Deliang, Deputy Party Committee Secretary Associate Professor Yu Le and Professor Lin Guanghui. Also present were Assistant Director Yao Songkun, Alumni Affairs Officer Peng Xiaojuan, around ten alumni from academia, government and enterprises, and postgraduate representatives.

Academician Chen Deliang extended a warm welcome to returning alumni. He briefed attendees on the department’s progress, encouraging them to broaden vision and pursue exploration in research and practical work. He hoped alumni would continue to support the department and strengthen exchanges and cooperation. Lin Guanghui invited alumni to stay connected and visit regularly, joining efforts to boost the department’s growth.

Symposium in Progress

Yu Le reviewed the department’s fruitful progress in discipline building, global exchanges, faculty development and talent training. He noted that the department will pursue high-quality growth and strive to build a world-class Earth system science discipline featuring Chinese characteristics and Tsinghua attributes.

During the discussion, alumni exchanged views on discipline advancement, career growth and talent training. They acknowledged the department’s remarkable progress and hoped to deepen ties in research collaboration and talent development. Drawing on personal experience, alumni gave career guidance to students, urging them to clarify goals, leverage their strengths and make sound career plans.

The symposium built a communication bridge linking faculty, students and alumni, boosting information and experience exchange. Seizing this opportunity, the department will improve the long-term alumni collaborative education mechanism, transform alumni resources into educational strengths, and support students to thrive and embrace broader prospects.
