On the afternoon of September 3, the department of Earth System Science (DESS) held a special report on the 2018 graduate freshmen's ideological and political education in building 6, A113. Xu Peng, vice-minister of the research and engineering department of Tsinghua University, was invited to give theme lectures on Tsinghua University tradition and high-level talent cultivation, and Wu Haiping, deputy secretary of the general party branch of the DESS, was invited to lecture on the traditional moral education of the department.

Mr. Xu firstly gave a special report on being the best graduate students at the best university to the graduate freshmen in the DESS. Through the detailed and interesting school history story, such as the origin of the word "Tsinghua University" on the school badge, ancient buildings which are full of historical memories, initiating and participating in the "September 12" patriotic national salvation movement and excellent alumni who laid a solid foundation for modern Chinese science, Mr. Xu told the story of how Tsinghua University stood for a hundred years. Precisely because of the fine traditions which were formed in 100 years' history at Tsinghua University, students had a deep imprint of Tsinghua University. For example, "red and professional, comprehensive development" and collective construction were the fine traditions of Tsinghua University. As students of Tsinghua University, we should correctly understand and inherit these traditions. Mr. Xu encouraged graduate freshmen that, on the premise of solid professional skills, they also need to exercise their leadership and cultivate the feelings of home and country.

Next, Mr. Wu systemically introduced the postgraduate moral education. And he detailed the work on the party construction, the moral education of graduate students and the system of grant and loan, which were developed around five goals of graduate education (a big ideal, a good eloquence, a good essay, a good body and a normal heart). Ren Zhehao, a graduate freshman, said that through this special party class, we learned and understood the spirit passed down from generation to generation at Tsinghua University, and we could not help solemnly determined in our hearts: we should not only show our feelings for the country and the people, but also exercise our solid academic skills. We should cherish our time at Tsinghua University.
