On June 7, 2023, Professor Stuart Bearhop, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Global Engagement for the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy, visited the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University. Professor Luo Yong, Dean of the DESS, met with him in S825 conference room of Mong Man Wai Technology Building.

During the meeting, Luo Yong briefly introduced the history of cooperation between the Department of Earth System Science and the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy of the University of Exeter. Stuart Bearhop said that the first phase of the joint doctoral program of Exeter and Tsinghua was very successful, and he hoped to sign for the second phase of the cooperation agreement and open up a new situation of win-win cooperation. Bearhop believed that the two departments still have broad space for cooperation in the fields of planetary health, environmental science, engineering and computer science.

Next, the two sides exchanged views on how to establish academic cooperation and exchanges between the two departments. The two sides believed that in the future, more cooperation could be developed in exchange of students, exchange of faculty visits, and cooperation in applying for scientific research projects.

The University of Exeter is a member of Russell Group (consisting of 24 top research universities in the United Kingdom, regarded as the “Ivy League” in the United Kingdom). Since 2012, the university has been cooperating with Tsinghua University in many aspects, such as literature, history and philosophy, international relations, environment, ecology and physics. In the latest QS World University Discipline Ranking, 17 disciplines of the University of Exeter ranked among the top 100 disciplines in the world. Because of its outstanding performance in international cooperation, the University of Exeter ranked 39th in the 2023 ranking of the world's most international universities released by Times Higher Education at the beginning of this year. In the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Influence Ranking recently released by Times Higher Education, the University of Exeter ranked 18th.
