Recently, the international sustainability science program Future Earth announced its new leadership structure. Academician Chen Deliang, Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor at Tsinghua University, has been elected Co-Chair of Future Earth. This marks a further elevation of the influence of Tsinghua scholars in internationally coordinated research on global climate change and sustainable development.
Deliang Chen has conducted extensive research on climate change, Earth system science, and sustainable development, producing a series of internationally influential achievements in areas including extreme climate change, climate risks, and interactions within the Earth system. He has also actively promoted international scientific cooperation and global science governance. His election as Co-Chair of Future Earth reflects the high recognition by the international academic community of both his scholarly contributions and his leadership in international scientific coordination.
Future Earth is one of the world’s most influential international platforms for sustainability science cooperation. Initiated jointly by the International Science Council (ISC), the United Nations, and other international organizations, Future Earth is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research and global collaborative innovation in Earth system science, climate change, ecological and environmental studies, and sustainable development for human society. The platform brings together leading scientific communities from the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, and policy research, and plays an important role in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, and global environmental governance.
