On July 2, Department of Earth System Science of Tsinghua University held an annual review exchange meeting for independent scientific research institutions. The review team is composed of 7 experts from the joint committee members of Department of Earth System Science and representatives of co-constructed institutions, including Professor JIANG Jingkun, Vice Dean of School of Environment, Professor WU Tinghai, Dean of Planning Department of School of Architecture, Professor LIU Jingming of School of Social Sciences, Professor LIN Yanluan, Assistant Dean of Department of Earth System Sciences, Associate Researcher WU Haiping, Associate Dean of Department of Earth System Science, Associate Professor LU Hui, Group Leader of research group of Department of Earth System Science, and Associate Professor XUE Wei of Department of Computer Science. Professor JIANG Jingkun served as the leader of the review team. This annual review meeting reviewed two independent scientific research institutions: Global Change Research Institute, Tsinghua University and Tsinghua Urban Institute. Professor LUO Yong, Dean of Department of Earth System Science, and Professor BIAN Lanchun, Dean of Tsinghua Urban Institute attended the meeting. The review meeting was chaired by WU Haiping.

LUO Yong reported on the situation of Global Change Research Institute

Professor LUO Yong, Dean of Department of Earth System Science, first expressed his gratitude to the experts for their support to the annual review of the independent scientific research institutions of Department of Earth System Science, and reported on the work development of Global Change Research Institute of Tsinghua University, including the basic situation of the organization, the organization's positioning and construction goals, scientific research results, academic activities, management committee and system construction, resource guarantee, and subsequent work plan.

BAI Yuqi reported on the situation of Tsinghua Urban Institute

Joint General Secretary of Tsinghua Urban Institute, Associate Professor BAI Yuqi of Department of Earth System Science, and Associate Professor LIN Peng of the School of Architecture, Joint General Secretary of Tsinghua Urban Institute, jointly reported on the institutional development of Tsinghua Urban Institute. Key statements were made on the institution’s scientific research achievements, academic activities, resource guarantees and next development goals.

Review team carefully listened to the main work reports of the two scientific research institutions in 2020, and carefully reviewed relevant materials. During questioning and exchange session, review team and two reporters exchanged views on the aspects of scientific research projects undertaken by the institute, the output of scientific research papers, and operation management.

After careful and comprehensive evaluation and communication, the review team fully affirmed and highly praised the achievements of the two independent scientific research institutions of Department of Earth System Science, and agreed to continue to retain the two scientific research institutions of Global Change Research Institute and Tsinghua Urban Institute. It is hoped that the Institutes will continue to utilize the advantages of the platform, coordinate relevant forces, and make more contributions in the fields of numerical simulation of earth system, carbon neutrality, air pollution and its governance, global change and human health, high-quality urban development, and related discipline construction. At the same time, the expert group put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on the future development of scientific research institutions based on actual situation: First, is to hope that the co-construction units of scientific research institutions will have more solid and effective cooperation and play a greater role as a platform; Second, is to strengthen the standardization of institutional operation and management, and further improve the construction quality of related disciplines.

LUO Yong said that Department of Earth System Science will attach great importance to the feedback from the expert group and combine with suggestions of experts. In the future construction and development of scientific research institutions, it will continue to strengthen close cooperation with co-construction units, and give full play to the platform of Global Change Research Institute in talent training, introduction of teachers, and discipline construction.
