In the afternoon of June 11, Professor TANG Xu from Fudan Development Institute visited Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University. Professor LUO Yong, Dean of Department of Earth System Science, met with TANG Xu at 818, South Building, MENG Minwei Science and Technology Building. The two parties exchanged views on cooperation and development and other related matters. QU Wei, Director of the Continuing Education Center of School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, XU Lei, Associate Professor of Vanke School of Public Health, Professor YANG Jun of DESS, Associate Professor CAI Wenjia, and Assistant Professor TONG Dan attended the meeting.

 

LUO Yong, on behalf of DESS, welcomed Professor TANG Xu's visit and expressed his gratitude to TANG Xu for his continuous support to DESS. LUO Yong introduced the development history, discipline construction, talent cultivation and scientific research achievements of DESS to the guests. He said that Professor TANG Xu's visit opened up a new situation of close cooperation between DESS and Fudan Development Institute and Atmospheric Science. He hopes that, in the future, the two sides will strengthen communication, continue to raise the level of cooperation, and make achievements.

QU Wei, Director of the Continuing Education Center of School of Social Sciences, focused on the project of the "Horizon Global Youth Common Development Program". The project adheres to the purpose of "ignite the dreams of youth, help the growth of life, cultivate leading talents, and pilot the power of youth". Every year, outstanding students are selected for internships in international organizations for awakening the awareness of young people to participate in the sustainable development agenda, inspiring young people to devote themselves to sustainable development, and promoting the global youth to put sustainable development into practical actions.

TANG Xu affirmed the recent scientific research achievements of DESS and the "Horizon Global Youth Common Development Program" project of School of Social Sciences. He pointed out that he hopes to establish a close cooperative relationship with DESS and School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua to promote the high-quality development of global change research and the cultivation of global competent talents.

The participating teachers of DESS introduced their respective research fields. The two sides exchanged views on climate change research and international talent cultivation, and conducted in-depth discussions on issues such as global climate governance and renewable energy. Both sides stated that DESS, School of Social Sciences, and Development Institute of Fudan University will further cooperate in-depth to serve the country's strategic needs through cross-discipline integration.

TANG Xu is currently a professor at Development Institute of Fudan University, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences/Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, and concurrently a senior scientific consultant of the IRDR Program Office of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. He used to be the Director of the Weather and Disaster Mitigation Services Department of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a special agency of the United Nations, the Director of the Science and Technology Department of the China Meteorological Administration, the Director of the Development Strategy Research Office, the Director of the East China Regional Meteorological Center, and the Director of the Shanghai Meteorological Administration.
