From June 2th to 4th, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) organized the “2018 National Outstanding College Student Summer Camp”. This activity received over 160 applications from college students all over the country. After selection, there were 56 outstanding college students entering into this summer camp. They are from 28 universities including Tsinghua University, Renming University of China，Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, Wuhan University, et al.

On the opening ceremony, Prof. Gong Peng, director of the DESS, delivered a welcome speech. Zhang Qiang, deputy director of the DESS, introduced the policy of exemption graduate admission. Next, Prof. Luo Yong, party secretary of the branch, introduced the schedule of this summer camp and made requests for the campers. In the free talk section, the students interacted with teachers positively. The teachers from different research groups then introduced their own research background and research field to the undergraduate students.

During the camp, the undergraduate students took test and interview, as well as face-to-face talk with professors.

This summer camp aims at promoting the communication between the outstanding college students and their knowledge of the geoscience at Tsinghua University. Through this summer camp, these students can experience the international atmosphere of education and research in DESS. The department will also provide a platform for the outstanding campers to pursue their advanced studies in DESS.
