On the afternoon of April 20, as the series of activities for the “Earth Day”, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) held science lectures entitled “Caring for Beautiful Homeland and Valuing Natural Resources - Telling the Story of Huangshan Mountain” successfully in the the Sunshine Hall of the Rom Building.
Wu Haiping, deputy director and deputy secretary of general party branch of the DESS, delivered a speech. He welcomed the guests from the Huangshan Scenic Spot Management Committee and the present teachers and students. Through this event, Wu hopes that the DESS and Huangshan Scenic Spot can further deepen the cooperation in ecological protection and disciplinary development.

Afterwards, Yang Bin, director of the Public Service Center of the Anhui Meteorological Administration, gave a lecture on "Exploring a new model for the protection and utilization of meteorological tourism resources”. He suggested that in the face of the increasingly fragile meteorological environment, the development of tourism resources should take into account both the protection and scientific exploitation. In the final of his report, Yang introduced the construction and future prospects of the National Meteorological Park, and expressed the firm confidence in bringing this concept from China to the whole world.

Li Wei, evaluation expert for the World Geological Park of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Geological Park and director of the Huangshan Geopark Management Office, gave a lecture on the “Protection of the Huangshan Earth System: Theoretical Development and Experimental Innovation” later. Li displayed the rich ecological resources and profound cultural heritage of Huangshan from ancient and modern classics. He said that experts from related fields in Tsinghua University have proposed innovative proposals for the Huangshan Scenic Spot to improve its management and ecological protection, which was based on the integration of geomorphology, ecology, and humanities.

In the following activities related to the Earth Day, Zhang Qiang, deputy director of the department, introduced the subject of Atmospheric Science (Global Change Direction) Miner of the DESS to the present teachers and students.

At the end of the activity, the signing ceremony for a joint venture of the graduate student employment practice base in Huangshan was held. Wang Hanqiu, chief engineer of the Huangshan Geopark Administration, and Wu Haiping, deputy director of the DESS, signed the agreement on behalf of the two parties.
In Wang's speech, he said that the Huangshan Scenic Spot Management Committee will actively support the construction of the base. He hope that the two parties will jointly shoulder the responsibility of the popularization of science, and promote the scientific research cooperation and innovation.
