In order too review bamboo resources in the Republic of Madagascar and promote surface mapping software developed independently by the Department of Earth System Science of Tsinghua University, Zhang Meinan and Li Zhichao went to Madagascar for software training and field research from July 31 to August 20. The study was invited by the General direction of forest in Madagascar and supported by the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan.

On July 31, 2017, the Chinese research team introduced a series of global land cover mapping products led by Tsinghua University to key personnel of the Ministry of Forestry. From August 1 to August 2, they conducted software training for 15 researchers from the Ministry of Environment, Missouri Botanical Garden, Royal Botanical Garden, PROSPERER, Conservation International and the University of Antananarivo. At the same time, students also give feedback in the light of personal learning experience. Finally, the Chinese team received an interview with the Express de Madagascar media in Madagascar, detailing the relevant achievements of the project.

From August 3 to August 3, 2017, the Chinese delegation discussed with experts from the Ministry of Forestry, International Bamboo & Rattan Institute and Missouri Botanical Garden about the field investigation plan, confirmed the route of investigation and completed a 17-day field trip. A total of more than 400 samples of bamboo and a certain amount of other land samples were collected. The visit covered areas such as Thomasina, Andasibe National Park, Vatomandry and Ambanja.

The Madagascar field trip was a rewarding one, boosting Tsinghua University's application of surface mapping in the country and broadening its broader cooperation with Madagascar.
