This lecture systematically introduces the patterns and mechanisms of the impact of global warming on the water cycle in the Western United States. Over the past 75 years, warming has increased the rain–snow ratio in winter across the Western United States, reduced snow accumulation and driven glacial shrinkage. It has also substantially advanced the onset and peak timing of spring snowmelt runoff and lowered the frequency and magnitude of rain-on-snow floods. This lecture further elaborates on key scientific issues, including divergent hydrological responses to warming in warm and cold seasons, changes in summer runoff and its predictability, and primary controls for simulating and projecting annual runoff variations.
主讲人简介:
Dennis Lettenmaier is a Distinguished Professor at UCLA. His research interests include hydrologic modeling and prediction, hydrology-climate interactions, and hydrologic change. He is an author or co-author of over 350 journal articles. He received American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Huber Research Prize, American Geophysical Union (AGU) Hydrology Section Award, American Meteorological Society (AMS) Charney Medal, and AGU Horton Medal. He was the President of the Hydrology Section of AGU. He is a Fellow of AGU, AMS, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and the International Water Academy.
