Erle Ellis is Professor of Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Director of the Anthroecology Laboratory (https://anthroecology.org). A Global Highly Cited Researcher, he studies the ecology of human landscapes to inform sustainable stewardship of the biosphere. A leading scholar of the Anthropocene, in 2008 he introduced the concept of Anthromes (anthropogenic biomes). He is a Visiting Fellow at Oxford’s Martin School, Lead Author of the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment, Fellow of the Global Land Programme, Senior Fellow of the Breakthrough Institute, and former member of the Anthropocene Working Group.

Erle Ellis will present his work contributing to the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report for 2026 that is building an aspirational approach to motivate progress towards a world where people and nature thrive together through a new measure of progress that includes nature - the Nature Relationship Index (NRI).
