讲座简介

China has the longest history in the world. Among those historical archives, past natural disasters have been meticulously recorded in different formats. Recently, I have been involved in several research groups nationally and internationally (e.g., PAGES----Flood Working Group & INQUA 2019----Terrestrial Processes, Deposits and History Palaeohydrology and fluvial archives). Here I will present two papers along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. The first paper will focus on the small catchment of River Jing. We have reconstructed the timeseries of past floods and droughts from 1650 using historical archives. We have found at decadal time scales; the floods & droughts are synchronised with solar activities. The second paper will focus on the lower reach of the Yellow River. We have retrieved historical archives about levee breaches on the lower Yellow River since AD 11. We evaluated each line of descriptions and narratives about the location, timing, and nature of each event in these archives, ending up with a detailed timeline of levee breaches during the last 2000 years on an annual time scale. Our results reveal a remarkable variability of levee breaches superimposed on a long-term increasing trend.
