Introduction to the Lecture:

Climate change effects are particularly expressed through impacts on vegetation. This implies a demand for predictive models of impacts by climate extremes and responses of vegetation to gradual environmental change. In this seminar, I discuss a set of key scientific challenges that need resolving for making climate impacts modelling robust and relevant for stakeholders. I will show examples from our research where we use diverse data, mechanistic ecosystem modelling and machine learning for answering questions with a focus on understanding spatial heterogeneity of vegetation sensitivity to water deficits, and modelling acclimating responses of plant traits to environmental change.

Profile of the Speaker:

Benjamin Stocker is Assistant Professor for Geocomputation and Earth Observation, University of Bern, Switzerland. He obtained his PhD from University of Bern in 2013 and became Assistant Professor at ETH, Zurich (2019-2022). He develops methods for using eco-evolutionary optimality principles in mechanistic ecosystem models and for using machine learning in impact predictions of climate extremes. His research uses diverse ecological datasets (eddy covariance, forest inventories, remote sensing, and ecosystem manipulation experimental data) for model predictions feeds into his development of open access libraries for vegetation modelling. His publications have been cited more than 11000 times.
