Recently, two doctoral candidates of Associate Professor Jonathon Wright’s Research Group of the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University, won prizes at the ICDM Workshop 2024 of IAMAS held in Nanjing, China. Chen Ruiyuan won the Best Student Oral Presentation Award and Zhang Shenglong won the Best Student Poster Award.

Chen Yuanrui mainly studies the dynamic process related to atmospheric fluctuation and its downstream influence. From the perspective of cyclic atmospheric fluctuation, his research group has put forward a new marine heatwave triggering mechanism (Recurrent Synoptic Waves Instigate Severe Marine Heatwave in the Southwest Pacific). This study reveals the specific physical process of how the circulatory system triggers marine heatwaves, with an emphasis on the importance of the depth change of the ocean mixed layer to the extreme events in the southwest Pacific Ocean, offering a new perspective for the study of marine heatwaves.

In 2024, Zhang Shenglong engaged in exchange study with Professor Lu Mengqian’s Research Group at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, focusing on the study of atmospheric water and energy cycle. In view of the increasing climate change and more frequent extreme events, his research group has developed a generalized Lagrangian attribution tool for hydrometeorological extremes, which can quantitatively analyze water vapor sources and heat sources (sensible heat and latent heat), water-heat transmission and the exchange between water and heat, offering a powerful tool for future studies of the change and development of extreme events.

The ICDM Workshop 2024 of IAMAS is themed “Linking Weather and Climate Dynamics Across Scales”. Top meteorologists and researchers from all over the world gathered together to hold extensive discussions on topics such as weather and climate change, application of machine learning in weather-climate dynamics and prediction. The presentations delivered by Chen Yuanrui and Zhang Shenglong were particularly distinguished and garnered significant recognition from the judging panel.
