On January 6, 2022, the Department of Earth Science System (DESS), Tsinghua University held a symposium for volunteers of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in S818, Meng Minwei Science and Technology Building in order to fully understand the volunteers' thoughts and needs, and to ensure that volunteers be devoted to the volunteer services for the Winter Olympics. Attending the symposium was Associate Professor Lu Hui, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Department of Geography, Associate Professor Yu Le, Youth Committee Member, Teacher Chen Yawei, Organizing Committee Member, and six graduate students from the DESS who participated in the volunteer services for the Winter Olympics.

In the volunteer services for the Beijing Winter Olympics, Ni Hao and Zhang Yutong took part in the Pacesetter Group, Wu Yuhui and Zhou Yufeng took part in the Venue Volunteer Work, and Li Miao and Zhang Shenglong took part in External Liaison and City Volunteer Work respectively. Based on their own work, the volunteers detailed the interview selection and training preparation in the early stage, epidemic prevention and control in the later stage, as well as induction tasks and volunteer cycle, among other matters. Volunteers noted that despite the hardships they had undergone in training, they were proud to directly participate in the work related to the Winter Olympics, which would leave an unforgettable memory.

At the symposium, Chen Yawei inquired in detail about the difficulties faced by their volunteers in their studies and life, and answered the questions from them. She said that volunteering has always been a fine tradition of the DESS, having produced excellent examples of five-star volunteers at the municipal and school levels. She hoped that volunteer students would carry forward the tradition and do a good job in volunteer service.

Yu Le expressed his regards to the volunteers for their hard work. He stressed that the volunteer service offered a rare opportunity, but at the same time, volunteers shoulder great responsibilities. He wished that everyone would participate in volunteer activities in good spirit, and that while doing a good job in volunteer services, they should not lack off their studies and should develop well in an all-round way.

Lu Hui affirmed every volunteer’s early efforts. He communicated with the volunteers one by one, asking them in detail about their recent status and their subsequent volunteer tasks. Lu wished that everyone would devote themselves to volunteer service work, fully display the spirit of DESS, Tsinghua, and perform well in this lively patriotic education course in the Winter Olympics. He noted that the supervisors of the graduate volunteers and the teachers of the Graduate Work Team will fully support the volunteers’ work. The volunteers in the symposium replied that they would bear in mind their teachers’ advice and shoulder the mission of students from DESS, Tsinghua University.
