On May 21, 2021, a series of activities of Department of Earth System Science "Drink Hour-Sharing Session for New Young Scholars of Department of Earth System Science" was held at S825, South MENG Minwei Science and Technology Building. DENG Zhu, an academic new young candidate of Department of Earth System Science, shares his scientific research experience and feelings.

DENG Zhu started by talking about the interview of Academician DING Zhongli by reporter CHAI Jing that he had watched ten years ago. "In the program, Academician DING's words of striving for fair emission reduction rights planted seeds in my heart, which had a great influence on my later choice to engage in research on carbon emission inventory construction," said DENG Zhu.

During his middle school years, DENG Zhu had a keen interest in programming and geography. He planned to apply for the major of geographic information technology, but he "missed" because of studying literature during high school. Before the end of his freshman year, he passed the professional examination and finally transferred to the School of Geography and Planning of Sun Yat-Sen University. During his undergraduate studies at Sun Yat-sen University and his master's degree at Tsinghua University, his accumulation in the field of remote sensing has greatly improved his ability to discover and solve scientific problems. With the growing interest in carbon emissions scientific research, he applied for a master's degree transfer and was approved. Within one year after his transference, DENG Zhu and his team members built the first global near-real-time quantitative assessment model of carbon emissions, and established the current global carbon emissions database with the highest time resolution and the fastest updating speed.

Exchange and discussion during the session

After the sharing session, DENG Zhu had a free exchange with the students. He replied to the doubts of students in scientific research, life and career choice one by one. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of strengthening communication with mentors and actively participating in international cooperation when carrying out research work. "Frequent communication with your mentor will enable you to move forward every day, and cooperation with internationally renowned experts and scholars will enable you to always keep up with the forefront direction of this field. During the hardest time of Ph.D., you need to persist to welcome the arrival of dawn," said DENG Zhu.

Throughout the sharing and communication process, everyone listened carefully and discussed actively, and the response was enthusiastic. The students said that they have benefited a lot from sharing and communication of Brother DENG Zhu, and provided a good reference for their future scientific research.
