At noon on April 14, the Think Tank Center and the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) held a seminar themed Two-way Empowerment of Disciplines and Think Tanks for National Governance in Mong Man Wai Technology Building.
Over 20 faculty members attended the event, including Ru Peng, Party Branch Secretary and Deputy Director of the Think Tank Center, Deputy Director Yang Xiu, Department Party Secretary Zhang Qiang and Associate Chair Li Wei. The session was presided over by Lu Hui, Associate Chair and Deputy Party Secretary of the department.
First of all, Zhang Qiang thanked the Think Tank Center for its solid support and assistance in faculty participation in think tank programs, and welcomed the research and exchange events organized by the center. He presented an overview of the department covering its historical evolution, faculty profile, research features and academic research focuses.
Subsequently, centered on the theme Two-way Empowerment of Academic Disciplines and Think Tanks for National Governance, Yang Xiu delivered a systematic overview of the Think Tank Center. Her presentation covered the background and significance of think tank research, the center’s basic profile, its efforts in serving national governance, the two-way empowerment mechanism between academic disciplines and think tanks, as well as future work plans and strategic reflections.
During the discussion session, participating faculty engaged in in-depth dialogues on core themes, including matching the needs of national authorities, translating scientific research outcomes into practical applications, advancing science diplomacy, and conducting research on key national priority areas. Drawing on his rich work experience, Ru Peng provided detailed responses and professional guidance to questions raised by the attending faculty.
In his concluding remarks, Zhang Qiang pointed out that through this exchange seminar with the Think Tank Center, the faculty of Tsinghua DESS had developed a comprehensive and clear understanding of the work in the think tank field. The department will rely on the Tsinghua University Institute for Global Change Studies as a platform, and actively mobilize all its faculty to participate in think tank development, contributing the department's strength to the Central Government's governance.
