To celebrate the 114th March 8 International Women's Day, the Labor Union of the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) launched a handbag DIY activity themed “Women's New Image and Ingenuity” and a women's health lecture themed “Health and Beauty”. Geng Rui, Secretary of the Party Committee of the DESS, attended this series of activities and extended sincere greetings and best wishes to the hard-working women teachers.

On the afternoon of March 7, the DESS Labor Union organized female faculty and staff members of the department to carry out a handbag DIY activity themed “Women's New Image and Ingenuity”. Nearly 30 women participated in the activity.

During the activity, the teacher of the workshop introduced the origin, implication and manufacturing technology of metal frame pouches and bucket bags, and explained the making process and sewing method in detail. After selecting their favorite styles and colors, the women faculty and staff members immediately started to make bags. After more than two hours of hard work, they completed many exquisite works of traditional style, drawing constant cheers at the scene, as everyone shared their experience while making bags.

Additionally, to relieve the pressure at work, the DESS Labor Union organized female faculty and staff members to take a walk in the Yuanmingyuan Park on the afternoon of March 11, where everyone could enjoy healthy exercise in the warm spring.

The DESS Labor Union cares about both mental and physical health of the female faculty and staff members. On the afternoon of March 12, the Labor Union organized a lecture on women's health themed “Blessed with Health and Beauty”, and invited Liu Yunduo, Chief Physician of the Gynecology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University, to talk about cervical cancer. Starting from the statistics of the National Cancer Center, Doctor Liu explained in detail the transmission route, etiology, preventive measures, screening and vaccination of cervical cancer. Following the talk, all the people attending the lecture held further exchanges on issues of concern. The female faculty and staff members all noted that they had benefited a lot from the lecture, which had rendered a more comprehensive understanding of their own health.

These “March 8” International Women's Day activities not only enhanced the festive atmosphere and strengthened team cohesion, but also enriched the cultural life of the female faculty and staff members. In this way, everyone could enjoy some leisure after their busy work and devote themselves to their work more enthusiastically. It is hoped that the female faculty and staff members of the DESS will always be hopeful, loving and happy in their future lives.
