On January 20 -21, 2024, the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) of Tsinghua University and the Institute of Global Change of Tsinghua University held the "Earth System Science Forum" both online and offline to promote exchanges and discussions in the field of earth system science and build a high-level exchange platform for young talents at home and abroad. Dean Luo Yong and Secretary of Party Committee Geng Rui of the DESS, and other department leaders attended the forum. The forum was presided over by academic leaders Professor Zhang Qiang and Professor Bing Xu.

Since the announcement of registration in December 2023, this forum has been extensively followed by young scholars from more than 100 well-known universities and research institutions at home and abroad, such as MIT, Munich Technical University, Berlin Technical University, Tsinghua University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Through the assessment by experts from the Organizing Committee of the Earth System Science Forum, 17 outstanding young scholars at home and abroad were selected as speakers to participate in this forum.

Luo Yong addresses the forum

P rof. Luo Yong first extended a warm welcome to the participants on behalf of the DESS, and introduced the DESS in Tsinghua University from its history of development , discipline construction, faculty, scientific research, research results and key experimental project construction.

Seventeen outstanding young scholars at home and abroad delivered reports from the ecological direction and the atmospheric direction respectively, and answered questions from experts and professors. Participants discussed the innovation of basic research in China, and experts present in the forum encouraged young scholars to pursue the systematic research of earth science, dare to challenge authority and contribute to maintaining the safety of the Earth's ecological environment and the sustainable development of mankind.

Site of the forum

This "Earth System Science Forum" was the first major academic event held by DESS in 2024. In the future, DESS will continue to leverage the brand advantage of "Earth System Science Forum" as and play an active role in promoting the rapid development and organized implementation of Earth System Science.
