On September 15th, the winners of THE XPLORER PRIZE 2022 were announced, including Professor Zhang Qiang from the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University.

THE XPLORER PRIZE funded by Tencent Foundation was inaugurated in 2018. As a public interest award spearheaded by scientists, THE XPLORER PRIZE upholds the mission of being future-oriented, supporting promising researchers and encouraging exploration” and inspires young scientists and technicians to explore the "no-man's land" of science without worries. Each year, no more than 50 winners are selected from ten fields of basic science and cutting-edge technology, and each winner will receive a total of RMB 3 million within five years, which is by far one of the largest funding programs for young scientific and technological talents in China.

According to the Charter of THE XPLORER PRIZE, the Review Committee of THE XPLORER PRIZE shall follow the principle of objective and fair evaluation, and under the witness of the Oversight Committee of THE XPLORER PRIZE , conducts pre-selection, preliminary screening, preliminary examination, reexamination and final review on all award applicants, and finally select 50 awardees of the year.

Introduction to Professor Zhang Qiang

Zhang Qiang is Professor and Deputy Dean of the Department of Earth System Science in Tsinghua University, Distinguished Professor and Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, and an academic leader of the innovative research group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His main research direction is the change of atmospheric composition and the impact on climate and environment. He has won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the China Youth Science and Technology Award, Cozzarelli Prize of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the United States and other academic awards. Since 2018, he has been rated as Global Highly Cited Scientist (Clarivate Analytics) every year.
