From August 26 to 30, 2024, the International Summer School, “Research and Development and Application of Earth System Model”, was held in 6A117, the Sixth Classroom Building, Tsinghua University. This summer school was sponsored by the Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University and co-sponsored by the Beijing Super Cloud Computing Center. Professor Lin Yanluan, deputy dean of the DESS, presided over the opening and closing ceremonies.

Luo Yong delivers a speech
In his address, Professor Luo Yong, Dean of the Tsinghua University DESS, extended a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to the faculty, teaching assistants, and students participating in the summer school. He highlighted that in 2018, the DESS hosted its inaugural international summer school, titled "Research, Development, and Application of Earth System Models," with the aspiration of nurturing future leaders in computational earth science. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the summer school transitioned to a virtual platform in 2022, overcoming geographical barriers and attracting an unprecedented number of nearly 900 students, showcasing the boundless appeal of earth science research. Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and the remarkable outcomes of the teaching practices, the DESS has decided to institutionalize the summer school as a formal biannual educational course.
Professor Luo Yong emphasized that earth system models stand as a bridge between the mysteries of nature and modern science and technology. They not only provide a crucial key to understanding the operational mechanisms of the earth system but also illuminate a beacon of wisdom, guiding human society in exploring the unknown and addressing global challenges. He further noted that this year's summer school, themed "Application of Artificial Intelligence in Geoscience," aimed to integrate cutting-edge AI technology with the research and development of earth system models, thereby revitalizing geoscience research.

Fu Chenyang delivers a speech
In her speech, Fu Chenyang, Manager of the Strategic Cooperation Department at the Beijing Super Cloud Computing Center, emphasized that earth system modelling is a pivotal technology within the realm of geosciences. With the swift advancement of artificial intelligence technology, geoscience is now confronted with unprecedented opportunities for transformation. She highlighted that the summer school served as a platform to deepen Industry-University-Research collaboration with esteemed institutions like Tsinghua University. Looking ahead, both parties will persist in exploring novel applications and developments of artificial intelligence within geosciences, fostering an even greater number of exceptional geoscience talents for academic institutions.

Beyond theoretical lectures, this summer school offered students hands-on computer operations, facilitating the integration of theory with practice and empowering them with the skills to run AI models on supercomputing platforms—an endeavor that garnered widespread praise from participants. Furthermore, the Beijing Super Cloud Computing Center provided expert guidance on leveraging AI computing power and GPU resources, and generously donated RMB 100,000 to the public service computing fund.
A cadre of scholars from prestigious universities, including Tsinghua University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, and Fudan University, delivered lectures on earth system models and the application of artificial intelligence in geosciences. Meanwhile, technical support engineers from Beijing Beilong Super Cloud Computing Co., Ltd. ensured technical assistance for students' computer operation practice. Nearly 700 students across the world participated in this summer school.
