The Department of Earth System Science (DESS), Tsinghua University held the 2024 National Excellent College Student Summer Camp from June 8 to 10. Applications from more than 470 outstanding college students from all over the country had been received, from whom 66 students from Tsinghua University, the National University of Defense Technology and other well-known universities were selected. On the afternoon of June 8, all doctoral supervisors of the DESS and summer campers attended the Opening Ceremony, which was presided over by Geng Rui, secretary of the Party Committee of the DESS.

Luo Yong delivers a speech

Professor Luo Yong, Dean of the DESS, Tsinghua University addressed the Opening Ceremony. Commencing with the historical evolution of Earth system science at Tsinghua, Professor Luo delivered an elaborate narrative on the mission and evolution of the academic endeavor, underscoring Tsinghua’s proud legacy in Earth system science, extending back to its inception, when it embarked on nurturing professional talents for the nation. Amidst the backdrop of global climate change and the pursuit of the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" objective, he emphasized the imperative for universities to foster young leaders capable of navigating the world through the challenges posed by climate change. This, he noted, constitutes both the mission and responsibility of Tsinghua University.

Subsequently, Professor Luo elucidated on the paramount value and significance of research on Earth system science, outlining the department's disciplinary development objectives, faculty team, talent training vision, and mission. He further illuminated the DESS's unparalleled resources and future development roadmap, painting a vivid picture of the department's potential. Meanwhile, on behalf of the DESS, Professor Luo extended a heartfelt welcome to prospective students, encouraging them to embark on a new chapter in their academic journeys on Tsinghua University's beautiful campus.

Lin Yanluan makes an introduction

At the Opening Ceremony, Professor Lin Yanluan, Deputy Dean of the DESS, Tsinghua University, presented the itinerary of the summer camp along with the policy for student enrollment by recommendation, exempted from examinations. Subsequently, adhering to the disciplinary categorization within the DESS, faculty members specializing in Ecology and Atmospheric Science elaborated on their individual research interests and the current state of their respective research endeavors in detail.

On June 9, the camp participants presented their respective learning experiences and research outcomes, followed by an interactive dialogue among the participating teachers and campers. To further foster mutual understanding, the summer camp also facilitated one-on-one communication sessions. After three days of intensive study and engagement, the campers not only gained a comprehensive overview of the DESS’s overall development at Tsinghua University but also acquired a profound appreciation for the discipline’s historical evolution and the anticipated future development trajectory of Earth system science. This endeavor significantly broadened the campers’ professional horizons while reinforcing their sense of responsibility and mission pertaining to climate change issues.
