The Frontiers of Earth System Science is one of the best academic exchange platforms set up by the Department of Earth System Science for Tsinghua students and other academic staff both inside and outside the school. Professor Gong Peng, director of the Department of Earth System Science of Tsinghua University, presided over this forum. Nearly 100 Tsinghua University students participated in the exchange.

Ge Quansheng researcher gave a lecture entitled "Understanding of Geography" academic report at the forum. The report details the development process of geography, major geographical events (phenomena), theory and the current opportunities and challenges facing geography, and talk with students about the study of geography.

Ge Quansheng researcher pointed out that geography is the science of studying the surface of the earth. Ensuring global, regional resources, environmental safety and sustainable development is the historic mission of contemporary geography. Historically, geography had made a significant contribution to human development. Today geography has more conditions, means and capabilities to make greater contributions to human society.

After the academic report, Ge Quansheng researcher also patiently answered the questions of the students present. Ge Quansheng researcher stressed that a single discipline can not solve the geographical issues, must carry out interdisciplinary cooperation, and now the solution of geographical problems and the development of high-performance computing are closely related
