Introduction to the Lecture:

The north and south poles as areas sensitive to global climate change are critical to the Community of Shared Future for Mankind. Observation and exploration are key means to know, protect and utilize the polar regions, while the development and application of new technologies and equipment are crucial to improving the ability of polar observation and exploration. This paper reviews the present development and shortcomings of polar observation and exploration technology in China, and present planning, prospect and key tasks for the future.

Cheng Xiao, Professor of School of Geospatial Engineering and Science, Dean of the Office of Scientific Research & Development, and Director of the Polar Research Center of Sun Yat-sen University. In 2017, he won the honor of "Advanced Individual of Polar Expedition in China", and in 2019 he won the honor of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Prof. Cheng has been engaged in the research of polar remote sensing and climate change for a long time. He has participated in China's 16th, 22nd, 24th and 32nd Antarctic scientific expeditions, made more than 10 expeditions to the Arctic region, taken the lead in surveying and mapping the location for China Kunlun Station on the highest point of the Antarctic ice sheet, promoted the rapid development and system construction of Polar Remote Sensing UAV "Polar Eagle" series in China, and promoted the development and successful launch and application of BNU-1 Satellite, China's first polar-observing satellite. Prof. Cheng is currently an expert of the National Deep-Sea and Polar Key Technologies and Equipment Special General Group in the Tenth Five-Year Plan, a member of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education, and Secretary-General of the National Polar Science and Technology Expert Committee.
