Abstract
Nitrogen is an essential element of all living things, with diverse chemical forms, and is regulated by biological, chemical, physical and economic activities to form the biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen, which provides abundant food, energy and other social benefits for human beings, as well as serious environmental and climate warming problems. The systematic study of regional nitrogen cycle is of vital importance to the sustainable development of human society, especially the process of nitrogen input, transformation, migration, accumulation and loss with soil as the main medium and link. Prof. Gu has long engaged in the study of the nitrogen cycle, involving the basin, regional and global scales of nitrogen source, flow, whereabouts, effective utilization, ecological modeling and evaluation of environmental climate effect. Prof. Gu established the human-natural nitrogen cycle coupling system model (CHANS), significantly increasing the soil-water-air interface nitrogen flux estimation accuracy, quantitatively assessed the sources, flows, directions, effective utilization and spatiotemporal changes of man-made active nitrogen in China, and discussed the regulation mechanism of policies, technologies and other social and economic development factors on regional nitrogen cycle.
