Climate change and hydro-climatic extremes

Presenter Profile

ProfessorZbigniew W. Kundzewicz, Member of Academia Europaea and Corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, is Head of Department of Climate and Water Resources in the Institute for Agricultural and Forest Environment, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poznań, Poland. Over more than 15 years he was a Senior Scientist and now enjoys the guest status in the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Potsdam, Germany. He was a four-fold Coordinating Lead Author of IPCC publications. He was a Member of the Advisory Board on the Environment (including Climate Change) of the European Union Seventh Framework Programme, Editor (later Co-Editor) in Chief ofHydrological Sciences Journal(Wallingford, Oxfordshire, UK) and member of editorial boards of several scientific journals, thereinAdvances in Climate Change Research(Beijing, China). He authored over 500 academic publications and, according to Web of Science, his Hirsch index is 35. His principal research interest and expertise embrace: extreme hydrological events (floods in particular), climate change impacts, and sustainable development. In 2017, he received the Dooge Medal of the International Hydrology Prize of IAHS, UNESCO and WMO. Professor Kundzewicz obtained hisPh. D. and D. Sc. (Habilitation) in geophysics - hydrology, in1979and1985, respectively, from theInstitute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland and the life-long title of Professor of Earth Sciences from the President of the Republic of Poland (1993). He was also a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany and a Scientific Officer in the World Meteorological Organization (Hydrology and Water Resources Department) in Geneva, Switzerland. He has been involved in a long-term collaboration with Chinese scientists, most notably with Professor Su Buda (partly in the framework of the Sino-German cooperation). He has visited China 14 times.
