The Tsinghua Urban Institute at Tsinghua University (TUI) was founded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and Tsinghua University. Officially established on 20 November 2018, TUI is a national thinktank led by the Tsinghua University Department of Earth System Science in cooperation with other departments, including the Schools of Social Science, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Economics and Management, and Public Policy and Management. With the mission of enriching development in Chinese cities, TUI focuses on the wide variety of urban issues confronting the country, including planning, housing, ecology, environment, transportation, economy, and public security. Experts affiliated with TUI conduct systematic research and develop in-depth analyses with relevance to urban science, governance, and policy.

To strengthen scientific research capacity and cooperation, TUI is initiating and supporting collaborative research associations with academic and corporate partners. Forthcoming affiliate research centers include the Urban Evaluation and Research Center, the Urban Data Research Center, the Smart and Future City Center, the Center of Urban Renewal and Policy, and Consortium on big data and AI for future cities.
