On October 21, 2021, the National “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievement Exhibition was held in the Beijing Exhibition Center, which would last until the 27th of the month. Themed “Innovation-Driven Development Towards a Science and Technology Power”, the Achievement Exhibition highlighted the major scientific and technological achievements made by China since the in-depth implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy and building an innovation-driven country. Three research achievements of the Department of Earth System Science, Tsinghua University were presented in the exhibition.

This exhibition consisted of 12 sections, including century review, basic research, high and new technology, major projects, agricultural science and technology, social development, regional innovation, opening-up and cooperation and popular science. The research achievements of Professor Zhang Qiang, Professor Fu Haohuan and Associate Professor Liu Li’s research groups from the Department of Earth System Science were exhibited in the social development section and the basic research section respectively.

In the “Beautiful China” part of the social development section, the achievement of Professor Zhang Qiang’s research group of the Department of Earth System Science with the title of "China's Multi-scale Emission Inventory Model" was exhibited. This achievement, which has built a multi-scale dynamic emission inventory model in China, analyzing the spatio-temporal change trend and influencing factors of China's air pollutant emissions over the past 30 years, has been widely applied in national and local air quality forecasting systems, supporting the evaluation of the implementation effect of “the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan” and the “Campaign to Keep the Skies Blue”. Also, the model results have been adopted by many international research programs (such as the sixth evaluation report of the IPCC), exerting an extensive academic impact internationally.

Meanwhile, the “Shenwei Taihu Light” supercomputer in the form of a model, which the Department of Earth System Science operation and maintenance. The “Shenwei Taihu Light” supercomputer operated by the National Supercomputing Wuxi Center and built with national processors has won the first place in the TOP500 List of supercomputers in the world for four consecutive times. In the exhibition section of “basic research”, it was mentioned that the super-computing application based on Shenwei had twice won the "Gordon Bell" award, the highest award in the world for super-computing applications. Among them, the award-winning "Nonlinear Seismic Simulation" in 2017 was completed by Professor Fu Haohuan of the Department of Earth System Science in collaboration with scholars from various fields.

The results of Professor Fu Huan’s research group are mentioned in the part themed “Supercomputing Accelerates Scientific Research and Economic and Social Development”

Besides, in the exhibition section of “basic research”, the achievement of C-Coupler, the domestic earth system model coupler developed by the research group of Associate Professor Liu Li of the Department of Earth System Science, was exhibited under the theme “Domestic Earth System Model Coupler Promotes Self-reliance of Science and Technology”. The earth system model is a basic scientific tool of the earth system research and meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation, with a coupler being the basic platform to support the interaction among its layers. To end the reliance on imported European and American couplers over a long time, the research group of Associate Professor Liu Li started the independent research and development of couplers in 2010, realized original innovation, and built a domestic coupler, C-Coupler. By far, the coupler has been applied to the models of many units in China, laying a solid foundation for promoting the development of the earth system models in China.

C-Coupler, an achievement of Associate Professor Liu Li’s research group, is presented under the theme “Domestic Earth System Model Coupler Promotes Self-reliance of Science and Technology”

C-Coupler is adopted in the coupling mode of many domestic units, such as the land, sea and air multi-layer coupling prediction system presented in this achievement exhibition.
