On the morning of June 25, the 2022 Commencement for Graduate Students of the Department of Earth System Science (DESS) was held in the West Meadow of North Court, Tsinghua University. Professor Luo Yong, Party Secretary and Dean of the DESS, attended and addressed the ceremony. A total of 21 graduates and supervisors of the DESS Class of 2022 attended the ceremony, which was held both online and offline. The graduates of the Class of 2022 and their relatives and friends unable to attend the ceremony, faculties, students and alumni of the DESS, and friends from all walks of life supporting the development of the DESS witnessed this important moment of graduates' lives through the official Weibo of the DESS and the online live broadcast of "Xuetang Online". The ceremony was hosted by Associate Professor Lu Hui, Deputy Secretary of the DESS Party Committee.

The Commencement Ceremony was opened in the high-spirited national anthem. Professor Lin Yanluan, Deputy Dean of the DESS, read out the list of graduate students and outstanding graduates of the DESS in 2022, and extended his congratulations to the graduates.

Dong Runmin, graduate representative of the DESS for the 2021～2022 academic year, and "Tsinghua University Excellent Doctoral Graduate", Yue Siyu, winner of "Beijing Excellent Graduate" and "Tsinghua University Qihang Gold Award" and Deng Zhu, "Beijing Excellent Graduate" addressed the ceremony.

Dong Runmin, in an online speech, recalled her research career, and expressed her gratitude to the department and her supervisor. She recalled that in her exploration of research direction upon entering the university, Tsinghua's high-quality curriculum resources and free exploration space enabled her to venture into and enjoy interdisciplinary study. After her transfer to the PhD program and start of in-depth research, setbacks of all sorts helped her learn to examine herself, persevere, and finally grow up. She believes that scholars in Earth System Science trained in Tsinghua must bear in mind their mission and responsibilities, make brilliant contributions to their respective fields, carry on the spirit of Tsinghua and work for the development of our homeland.

Yue Siyu, a graduate representative, delivers a speech

Yue Siyu summarized her experience and reflections in scientific research, social work and moral education. The experience of taking part in scientific investigations and going deep into the wild made her learn how to identify and solve problems. The support and care of the supervisors and members of the research group taught her to share and collaborate. The sense of accomplishment from solving practical problems with the friends of the research group became her precious memory. The support of the university and department in research and leadership enabled her to achieve well-rounded development on the path of playing the “Scholar-and-Leader” role. She ended her speech by encouraging the students to carry forward the spirit of Tsinghua and create value in their respective positions.

Deng Zhu, a graduate representative, delivers a speech

Deng Zhu shared his insights on online studies, and with a view to his own research experience, encouraged the students not to get lost amidst peer pressure, quickly identify their own position and occupy a highland. He called on the graduates to embrace new jobs with self-confidence and take on the character of Tsinghua people; maintain their enthusiasm, hardworking and persevering spirits when studying in Tsinghua, and handle all kinds of unknown challenges that may arise in future work; and at the same time think more about how to contribute to our hometown, our motherland and the people.

Fu Haohuan addresses the ceremony

Prof. Fu Haohuan of the DESS delivered a speech as the representative of graduate supervisors, sending sincere wishes and parting messages to the graduates. He noted that vision and mindset are the strengths and advantages of the DESS students; boundary-crossing courage, inter-disciplinary mentality and systematic thinking are a major feature of the DESS. He wished that graduates would practice the ideal that they should “be the first to bear the burden for the world and the last to enjoy the fruit of collective achievement,” maintain the mindset of "seeking harmony in diversity", uphold the spirit of "self-discipline, self-improvement, and social commitment”, while always keeping up their interest and passion for new things, their self-examination and self-uplifting, and achieving development and growth at their own pace.

Prof. Luo Yong expressed his warm congratulations to the graduates and their relatives and friends, as well as his heartfelt thanks to the faculty and staff who supported the students' growth. For the graduates about to leave the campus and step into society, Prof. Luo shared his life experience from three aspects: having lofty aspiration, proceeding step by step, and cultivating emotional intelligence. Prof. Luo noted that in the context of global change on a scale unseen in a century, the graduates should bear in mind the spirit of the important speech delivered by President Xi Jinping during his inspection of Tsinghua on the eve of the university's 110th anniversary, and “have lofty aspirations, go into the mainstream, take a grand stage, and undertake a great enterprise.” Prof. Luo stressed that the graduates should keep the habit of lifelong study and exercise, cultivate the excellent quality of being reliable, never breach the moral standard, and dare to take responsibility. Finally, he encouraged the graduates to ride the winds and forge ahead bravely and steadily in their life journey, and contribute to the realization of the Chinese dream, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Finally, Prof. Luo Yong awarded appointment letters to the alumni directors of the DESS Class of 2022. The ceremony ended successfully with all people present singing the Tsinghua anthem.
