In order to carry out the study and education of Party history vividly, inherit and carry forward the revolutionary spirit, and further give play to the vanguard and exemplary role of student Party members, Department of Earth System Science (DESS) has actively carried out distinctive practice activities. From May 29 to 30, centering on the theme of "Exploring the Red Memory, Keeping the Original Mission in Mind", 18th Party Branch of DESS, the 20th Party Branch of DESS and teachers and students of DESS Research Center went to Shanghai to visit Duolun Road District, the North Bund, CHEN Yun Memorial Hall and other revolutionary sites, to carry out Party history study and exchange. More than 20 student Party members, the masses, and teachers from all grades of DESS participated in the activity.

PAN Qinbao, director of the Hongkou Party Building Research Office of the Shanghai Municipal Party School, gave a lecture on "Walking Special Party Lessons" to the teachers and students of DESS with the theme of "Red Memory of Duolun Road-Urban Underground Battle under the Party Leadership". This lively Party class started with a block known as the "red diagonal". Under the instruction of PAN Qinbao, the teachers and students of DESS visited the former residences of LU Xun, QU Qiubai, ZHAO Shiyan, designer of the five-star red flag ZENG Liansong, the retreat of Premier ZHOU Enlai, and the Memorial Hall of China League of Left-wing Writers. During the field visits, the teachers and students of DESS deeply felt the danger and difficulty of underground work of the Communist Party of China at the beginning of the revolution, deeply understood the perseverance of the Chinese Communists and the ups and downs and painstaking efforts that had taken to mobilize the masses to seek national independence and the liberation of people, and deeply understood the meaning of the oath to join the Party and the original intention and mission of the Communist Party of China to serve the people.

In the North Bund, the teachers and students of DESS conduct studies in Shanghai Postal Museum, Waibaidu Bridge, Shanghai People’s Heroes Memorial Tower, and other places. Together with people of Shanghai, these historic buildings have witnessed Shanghai's process of standing up, getting rich, and getting stronger. 

In CHEN Yun Memorial Hall and the former residence of Chen Yun, the teachers and students of DESS listened to the life and great deeds of Comrade CHEN Yun. His diligence, frugality and simplicity, and his determination to dedicate everything to the Party and the country made the present teachers and students deeply aware of young Party members of the new era how should they strengthen their lofty ideals and beliefs, and how should they inherit and carry forward Comrade CHEN Yun's g tradition of "not only the superior, and not only the book, but only the truth" in practical actions.

In addition, teachers and students of DESS combined practice and Party history learning experience to carry out intra-group exchanges to discuss how graduate students in the new era should serve the people of the motherland with professional characteristics. At the same time, after returning to school, it is planned to draw a map of the Party history of the Chinese Communist Party in various important historical periods in Shanghai, and teach the Party history stories behind the map. DESS will fully integrate professional characteristics, and learn Party history in an innovative way, so that Party history can be learned into the mind and heart, and strive to achieve the goal of "learning history to be clear, learning history to increase credit, learning history to respect morals, and learning history to practice".

As the second batch of Party building model Party branch establishment units, the 18th Party Branch of DESS Research Center, and the 20th freshman Party branch of DESS Research Center responded to the "Hundred Years of Party History, A Journey of Tens of thousands of kilometers" postgraduate Party branch special activity number to hold a red practice. With the theme of "Exploring the Red Memory, Keeping the Original Mission in Mind" as the theme, it combines the characteristics of earth system science to study Party history in an innovative form to meet the requirements of studying Party history, understanding ideas, doing practical things, and opening up a new start.
