From September 16 to 19, 2018, the fifth national symposium on stable isotope ecology and the 2018 annual conference of the professional committee of stable isotope ecology of the Chinese ecological society were held in Shenyang.A total of 550 experts, scholars and graduate students from the United States, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Japan, China and other countries participated in the conference.

The conference was sponsored by the stable isotope ecology committee of the Chinese academy of ecology, and undertaken by Shenyang institute of applied ecology of the Chinese academy of sciences and key laboratory of forest ecology and management of the Chinese academy of sciences.In recent years, stable isotope technology is gradually becoming a powerful tool to understand the frontier of material circulation, climate change, environmental evolution, pollutant migration and other fields. The application of this technology can solve the ecological and environmental problems that are difficult to be explained by traditional research methods, greatly increasing our understanding of the unknown world.The convening of the national symposium on stable isotope ecology provided a good platform for strengthening the communication among Chinese stable isotope ecologists, tracking the international research frontiers in real time, and promoting and popularizing the application of stable isotope technology in related research fields in China.

On the morning of September 17, the opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by researcher Fang Yunting, the deputy director of Shenyang institute of ecology.Zhu Jiaojun first delivered a speech of welcome. On behalf of the organizers of the conference, he welcomed the representatives to the conference, conveyed the congratulations of Ouyang Zhiyun, the president of the Chinese society of ecology on the successful convening of the conference, and expressed his gratitude to professor Lin Guanghui for vigorously promoting and popularizing the application of stable isotope technology. He also introduced the use of stable isotope technology by several research teams of Shenyang institute of ecology and the fruitful research results.

Lin Guanghui delivered a speech and made a special invitation report.He briefly reviewed the development of the national conference on stable isotope ecology in 10 years,pointed out that the application of stable isotope technology was deepening and the research team was growing stronger. He called on scholars to promote the application of stable isotope technology and play its due role to solve more ecological, environmental and people's livelihood problems.
