On the morning of September 4, 2017, the opening ceremony of the Department of Earth System Sciences, Tsinghua University, was held in Room 4101 of the fourth teaching building. Tsinghua University Department of Earth System Sciences Party branch secretary Luo Yong, deputy director Zhang Qiang, academic leaders Wang Bin, representatives of teachers Fu Haohuan, Xu Shiming attended the ceremony, deputy director of the Department of Earth Sciences Wu Haiping presided over the ceremony. 2017 level graduate students attended the ceremony.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Professor Luo Yong, secretary of the Party branch of the Department of Earth System Sciences, gave a warm welcome to all the freshmen, and introduced the history of the development of geoscience in Tsinghua University, the development plan of geoscience and the main achievements. Then Professor Luo Yong used the famous meteorologist Rossby's story as an example, told the students how to create a healthy relationship between teachers and students, making new students benefit.

He also told the new students that the realization of the ideal road is bound to be alone, as Tsinghua people, to "dare to the world first", perseverance to overcome all difficulties.

He compared the rabbit Judy in the film 'Zootopia' as himself, told the new students about his own research experience so far. He told everyone to encounter difficulties to strive to overcome, can not give up on themselves, always one day will see the dawn. His speech was lively and interesting, inspired every student.
